School Olympic mural

I worked with about 25 year 7-11 pupils from Alsager school on a one day project to paint an Olympic themed mural.
I really liked the paintings graffiti artist Goldie made for the Athleticism show recently, so decided to use these for inspiration for the design.

The group picked their sporting heroes including skateboarder Tony Hawk and Hannah Cockcroft. We painted the background in a drippy, splattery style similar to Goldies paintings. I then roughly blocked the shapes of the athletes and let the pupils do the rest.

They did the filling in with sprays and the outline and details in marker pens. I was impressed how much they did themselves as I did not need to work into it at the end to neaten it all up. The details they produced on the Olympic mascots was great and I liked the schools version of the Olympic ring logo they had designed.

Chelmsford Art Trail

August 2011.
Fyans Skyhigh and Chock were invited to paint at the Chelmsford Art Trail by Brave1. He had been given an enormous amount of hoarding space to paint, some facing the train tracks by Chelmsford station. Very appealing. Luckily we were given a good spot facing the station.

Paint My Panda x Eastpak

As I work for the bag company Eastpak helping with the popular "Tag my Pak" promotion they offered me a show in their main store on Carnaby Street which is now up!
The show is on for about 2 months until the 20th Jan showing a mix of paintings & prints and graffiti photos plus a panda themed window display :)
It is located on the corner of Carnaby Street and Beak Street.

We will also be running a "Tag My Pak" event on the 3rd and 4th December so come down and get your new bag customised for free!

Graffiti Party

For Milos Barmitzvah i was commissioned to create a large graffiti name canvas with his interests shown on it, that guests could sign and leave messages on. In the past I have had guests sign round the outside of the piece but this time I tried keeping all the messages inside the letters as I think it looks neater.

ARK schools Music Gala

I was asked by Ark (who are a charity which runs a group of inner city schools) to work with a group of Year 10 pupils to help them design and create a mural which they would paint at a live music gala at the Barbican centre on the 4th July 2011. As the show was an indoor event we were asked to use a digital graffiti wall. I worked with St Albans Academy in Birmingham.
We didn't have access to the digital wall so I got the pupils to draw some designs on paper on the theme of the "4th July". They responded to the theme by drawing things that made them feel free, independent and happy (as it is American Independence day).
Once we had selected a group to take to London I gave them a go with real spray cans and explained if they could use them they would have no trouble with the digital board as it is much easier to handle. They also had to work all their individual designs together into one design that they would paint as a team on the graffiti wall. They would have 15-20 minutes per group on the day to paint the piece in the foyer as people came into the event.
The event itself was a busy day, the group had a few practise runs on the board alongside the other Ark schools. There were films, dancers and an amazing concert at the end.

Broomfields Junior- Stockton Heath

I created this mural to mark the 40th anniversary of the school and brighten up their playground at the end of Summer term this year. I had been sent designs from each year group to work into 4 murals.
Year 1 had done designs on school trips and school lessons
Year 2 had been given SEAL which stands for Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning
Year 3 had been given the arts and Year 4 sports.
A few pupils were picked from each year group to come and paint the pieces with me over 2 days.

Oakwood High - Eccles

I was working with a group of special needs (aspergers/autistic) teenagers back around Easter this year, to produce a backdrop for a performance they were doing at the Lowry. The piece was about Salford life and their identity. They had written poems on these subjects first.

Witton Church Walk

I was asked to work with a class of year 6 school children to produce a mural for their school playground. The themes were local history and life, Christian values and school. We discussed topics like the local salt mines, the effect money has on people, faith, hope, taking risks and the "Thundersprint" which is a big motorbike event.
We spent a day designing the mural in class then another day painting it. Everyone in the class got to contribute and paint the piece and we all had fun.

the Kiran Project

I worked with the Kiran project to create some graffiti canvases with their group of young muslim women at the end of their project which is outlined below.

"This summer we have collaborated with the University of East London (student union) and Maslaha working on a creative arts/ media project (FREE TO BE) aimed at young Muslim women aged 11 - 25. The aim of the programme has been to inspire young Muslim women and girls explore identity and communities addressing issues around:

Different forms of media and expression.
Develop a better understanding of how to access media and manipulate tools of expression, and be able to use them to have their voices heard.
To increase the presence and amplify the voices of Muslim women, creating a greater awareness of role models and the important role Muslim women can play within their communities.
To challenge negative stereotypes of Muslim women and empower them demand change and achieve it for themselves."

The "City Dogs" department of the Dogs Trust have been working with groups of young offenders teaching them responsible dog ownership & training skills. At the end of their week they asked me to come and work with the lads as a reward for all their hard work. Gotta say they were the nicest group of young offenders I have worked with so far :)

Walkden High August 2011

Walkden High (Salford) booked us to come and paint their school as they were moving from an old outdated site into a new building, so we were given free reign to paint the site as part of a summer holiday project. The themes for the project were the Olympics and animals. The olympics piece was created by getting each pupil to design a character to be an athelete or in the crowd. The animals i picked and allowed the kids to colour it however they wanted within the colour scheme. i then added the black outline at the end to bring the image out/

Back in Gateshead again...Chock n Pixie reppin at Comusica last weekend (23rd July) for a "Studio Ghibli" themed jam to help raise money and awareness for Save the Children Japan with the GMC and the Ouseburn Festival..
We held an art auction in Tanners as we felt that the festival would attract a large amount of people to the area, on the day we raised £400 and we still have half the work to auction off online in the near future so hopefully we will double that total. Watch this space for more information on this it may well be held online.
Thanks to all artists who contributed in anyway and Sandy Duff and the GMC/Comusica family for all their continued support :)

Hulme is where the heart is...

Gary from "Brickz n Stones" creative and I decided to brighten up some hoarding on the border of Hulme and Old Trafford- we got permission from the site owner and got to work. Finally we have finished it with the help of local graffiti artist Tags who dropped a nice Hulme lettering piece. The locals love it and we have had so many nice comments from people walking past and stopping in their cars. Glad you all like it :)

Braille Graffiti

I wanted to make some graffiti for blind people so i thought hmm... Braille graffiti, what would that entail? Graffiti is big and colourful letters, so how do I do that for braille? Well- making it big is easy and I can spray it even though blind people can't see colour. There is alot more to explore with this theme but here is my attempt for Eurocultured 2011 shown at the EASA Gallery in Hulme, Manchester for 1 week.

so the discs are raised off the wall like braille and the piece says "wildstyle" in reference to the film that helped bring hip-hop culture to the UK.I really like the patterns and wanna figure out how to explain colour in Braille somehow.

Kirkby Youth Zone fashion show

Super buzzin with my new Eastpak bag I use it for all my workshops to carry spray cans big pots of paint etc etc. This bag means I don't have to get a car. What more can I ask for!

A short canvas workshop with some young offenders.The themes of their workshop was issues they had been discussing previously such as what makes you angry. Confidence was quite low in this group and it was hard to get some of them to relax and enjoy creating artwork.

"European Capital of Culture" Turku 2011

I went to Turku the 2011 capital of culture with Spearfish to run a graffiti art project alongside puppet making and and mc workshop. I had never been to Finland and having got used to the warmer weather here was in for a shock when it went back to freezing snow. The people were really friendly and even though I didn't speak any Finish I managed to organise a great wall with the local Finnish writers who were already very skilled. Here is some photos from the trip.

My first impressions of Finland were the icy forests and moomins greeting me at the airport.

The talented local writers and my co-worker Tatu who translated for me (thank you :)) . The theme of the production is to be "Community". In this case the group are mostly skaters and the mural is in a skatepark. This is a nice easy job for me as the group can already paint and I like the theme.
There are not really any legal walls in Turku and the locals take any opportunity given to them to paint. Paint is also quite expensive and coloured emulsion hard to find.

Walking round town and a Finnish puppet show. I couldn't understand a word but it was still entertaining.

The blank canvas. We have 9 hours to paint over 3 nights.

The space is primed by the end of the first night. and everyone choses their spots.

We were making good time by the end of the 2nd nights painting. Alot of the pieces were painted, many thanks to interesting contraptions to make the ladders safe on the ramps. The mc group was also filming their video that night.

and there you have it... England meets Finland. A nice collaboration. Thanks to Spearfish for sorting it all out.

Chloe Princess Smith 1995-2010

A memorial painted for Chloe Smith (1995-2010) at summer 2010 by myself and a group of her friends (most of whom I had previously worked with on graffiti projects). I had taught Chloe the previous summer, she was a lovely girl and very popular. She died young and tragically from heart complications.
She is loved and missed by all who knew her. R.I.P Princess Chloe Smith- Forever Young. xxx

Claire and Skyhigh were called out over Christmas to paint an Alice in Wonderland themed mural for the beer garden at the Prince of Wales pub (in Putney), for their New Years Eve party. They transformed the interior of the pub into a magical wonderland world with giant mushrooms,magical trees and playing cards everywhere and had concocted a wonderland themed menu and cocktail list.

Arts Award-Huyton

I spent 1 day a week of the Autumn term of 2010 working with a group of teenagers at Huyton sports and Art College. This group were regularly excluded from lessons for being disruptive and rude to teachers. Most of them found it hard to pay attention or relate to normal lessons.
I worked with them on a series of graffiti art projects: painting boards, caps and canvases, making Christmas cards and explaining different terms within graffiti which they then made a slide show presentation about. We also made a group mural in the half term on the theme of Heroes and Villains. All their work was presented to the course funders teachers and parents at the end of term. We got a good response to the work from the group with regular attendance, they enjoyed painting the boards outside and making trucker hats most. The majority of the group passed their Bronze art award as a result.

The Dogs Trust Agility Day

A great but freezing cold day in a park in Hackney with the Dogs Trust. The day was to promote good treatment and training of dogs to the public and especially teenage boys. There was an agility course and training tips plus free micro chipping and graffiti caps from Paint My Panda.

We provide a creative activity at Barmitzvas and birthday parties for children & teenagers to get involved with throughout the night. I often paint a large canvas for whoevers party it is, I also prepare canvases for the guests to all paint throughout the night. In this case each guest told me their name which i sketched up in graffiti style, they then coloured the piece in and added embellishments using paint pens (as they are fume free and washable).

Brugal Rum

I was commissioned to paint a piece of art work to promote Brugal Rum. They chose 4 artists to paint 4 25ft murals in Manchester city center over 2 days. The other artist were Kelzo, Rocket and Fauna.

The theme of the work was to be the Dominican Republic as that is where the rum is brewed.
My piece was designed to bring sunny carnival vibes to the usually grey city centre. I wanted to show a warm musical style in my painting and the movement of the carnival.

As you can see there was some really exciting art work produced (despite occasional rain) and the Brugal word was successfully spread in Manchester.

Walkden Warehouse Jam

Thanks to Kelzo we were given the use of a warehouse to paint in Walkden as it is soon to be demolished. About 30 writers from the north west attended here are some of the results. There is also a really nice time lapse video of the main wall as it was getting painted.

The Dogs Trust

I did some work for The Dogs Trust charity this summer. They wanted their new project "City Dogs" to have a street edge. They were promoting free dog care advice and low cost micro chipping services to the teenage dogs owners in Hackney. I designed a City Dogs logo which is featured in their magazine WAG at the top of this entry, below is a backdrop I painted for a photo shoot along with sketches and pictures from the roadshows that took place in Hackney this summer- offering these services to the public.

K-Cafe interior

I was commissioned to paint the interior of the K-Cafe in Kingston-Upon-Thames earlier this year. I was asked to portray the skatepark and the community that used it so I drew the Kingsfield where the park is based along with all the different types of people who visit it skaters, bmx-ers, roller bladers, punks, emo's, old people, dog walkers and sports people.I also included the green parakeets which escaped and have bred in the local area and are now a regular feature along the river bank. I used images of the fallen down telephone box sculpture (a Kingston landmark) to cover up the dirtyness of the skirting around the bench. Many teenagers visit the park so the place gets very muddy!

These 8x4 ft boards painted with a group of outreach teenagers from Swinton in Salford. These lads were well known for causing trouble in the local area so we did this project with them to give them a sense of achievement. It will be mounted in their local skate-park. They are really proud of themselves and this and other work with them has helped their standing in the local community.

Helsby Hillside Centenary Mural

I met with the school council who collected ideas and designs from their peers. I then worked all of their suggestions into this final piece. The theme was Helsby and school life. The mural is 11m wide by 6m high my largest work to date.

A selection of work produced by teenagers at skills training centre Pro Co in Wigan. Working with Spearfish and Krek we led a series of workshops over a 15 week period (1 day a week) teaching different techniques design concepts and health and safety knowledge to a group of about 15 17 year olds. We made signs for around the college, painted furniture and designed and painted many murals around the center.

A series of workshops in 2009 created this large scale mural on the theme of Warrington. Paint My Panda worked with groups of year 10 and 11 pupils from Bridgewater High and some homeless people from the Opening Doors charity. It took a year to get mounted and we later found out it was on the wrong building and the intended site was down the road!
It has been on the main well received for such a large piece of artwork and should be in its Stockton Heath spot for a minimum of a year.

This was a show put on by 'Feltham Arts Association ' at Feltham Community College.
The show was the result of a week long programme of workshops involving young people at the college.Workshops included dance,costume design,make up,music and stage design and ran over the February half term.

I worked with Tom Ryall and we ran workshops to paint the stage backdrop which can be seen in the above images. We also painted some graffiti canvases with pupils.

"Let There Be Light" Art Residency

In 2008 I ran an art residency in St. Georges Church in Esher. The church was rarely used as a place of worship so local arts charity RC Sheriff Trust (http://www.rcsherrifftrust.org.uk) sponsored local artists to run workshops and create their own work in the space. I chose the theme of light and colour for my work.

I ran workshops in the church and also at local schools, special needs centres and elderly day centres to produce temporary stained glass windows for the church as it had no stained glass. We also painted glass bricks which will be mounted as an outdoor wall in a day centre in Walton-upon-Thames in the near future. Here are some pictures from the workshops.

I worked with a group of teenagers with aspergers, autism and other associated difficulties. We painted a mural in their dull smoking area and made graffiti canvases, some of them chose to make presents for loved ones.

Clear Skyhigh and Der volunteered their time to paint a wall that was covered in unwanted graffiti. The garage got a new look and the artists got their work viewable from the train line. The local residents were really pleased to have the wall looking brighter.
